Burkhardt Fruchtsäfte GmbH & Co. KG, a traditional juice producer from southern Germany, faced the challenge that the municipal wastewater treatment plant could no longer handle the large volumes of wastewater generated by production. Under regulatory pressure, the company had to act quickly to implement a future-proof solution.
In the first expansion stage, two anaerobic wastewater treatment modules were installed, complemented by gas cleaning, gas storage, and the energetic utilization of the produced biogas in a combined heat and power (CHP) unit. This setup significantly reduces the organic load in the wastewater while simultaneously generating electricity and heat for the company’s own operations.
The system is modular in design and prepared for further growth. An additional three modules are already planned to increase capacity and continue Burkhardt Fruchtsäfte’s long-term sustainability strategy.
