Heller-Leder GmbH & Co. KG in Hehlen is one of the few tanneries in Germany internationally renowned for its high-quality and sustainably produced leather. This family-owned company places great emphasis on craftsmanship, ecological responsibility, and innovative processes, making it a recognized specialist in the leather industry.
Since the existing in-house wastewater treatment plant was heavily overloaded and caused high operating costs, urgent action was required. In the first expansion stage, a module for anaerobic wastewater treatment was installed, supplemented by gas cleaning, gas storage, and the energetic utilization of the generated biogas in a combined heat and power (CHP) unit.
With this solution, Heller-Leder was able to significantly reduce its wastewater load, improve its cost structure, and at the same time generate renewable energy for its own needs – an important step in further strengthening its sustainability strategy.
