A medium-sized brewery in Germany had been operating its own wastewater treatment plant for many years, but the system was associated with high electricity costs and significant effort for sludge disposal. To improve both the efficiency and sustainability of wastewater treatment, a new solution was implemented in cooperation with FlexBio.
A FlexBio anaerobic wastewater treatment module was installed, complemented by gas cleaning, gas storage, and energy recovery from the produced biogas in a combined heat and power (CHP) unit with an electrical output of 20 kWel. This setup not only treats wastewater more efficiently but also generates electricity and heat for in-house use.
As a result, the brewery benefits from significantly lower operating costs and a sustainable improvement of its CO₂ footprint — a successful combination of brewing tradition and modern environmental technology.
